Hi, I'm Veronica!

People ask, "Why the passion for literacy?"

Many people develop a deep passion for literacy because they themselves have experienced reading difficulties, or have a loved one they are desperately trying to help.
That is not my story.
I was the kid who wouldn’t let my mom get away with skipping pages in the bedtime story at night, because I knew them by heart.

I was the kid who still remembers the excitement of holding that big shiny basal reader in my hands for the first time in first grade.
I was the kid who would rather read a book at recess, than play on the swings. Yep, I was that kid. I just really LOVED reading!
Fast forward many years to my first year teaching. I walked into my 5th grade classroom with big dreams of book clubs and novel studies. I couldn’t wait to share some of my favorite childhood books with my students.

What I figured out very quickly was that my students didn’t hold the same affinity for reading that I did. I was heartbroken. Why was reading such a non-preferred task for them?
Even as a first year teacher, it didn’t take long to realize that for most of my students, reading was really hard. They struggled to decode the words in most of the grade level material I handed them. I felt like I was failing because I didn’t know how to fix it.
This realization sparked a passion in me to figure out why kids were getting to 5th grade without being able to read well. I moved to kindergarten, then first grade, and dove into the research about teaching kids to read.

During the 18 years I spent as a classroom teacher, I pursued my master’s degree in Literacy Studies, became endorsed as a reading specialist, completed my National Board certification in early childhood, and became trained in Orton-Gillingham.
I left the classroom in 2021 because I wanted to have a greater impact on the literacy education of students in Washoe County.
Children who struggle with reading in the early grades, often remain behind their peers throughout school, and it can negatively impact academic progress in all areas.

My goal is to break this cycle so your child can succeed!
